Temple Church, Bristol
Temple Church, built in the twelfth century by the Knights Templar is located in Church Lane off Victoria Street in the centre of Bristol. The church was rebuilt in the late fourteenth century and underwent substantial restoration work in the late nineteenth / early twentieth centuries. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and listed Grade 1.
Since being damaged by fire in the Second World War, the church has been roofless and subject to deterioration and necessary repair. Public access is prevented by the possibilities of falling masonry and vandalism.
English Heritage, which acts as guardian of the church commissioned Prometheus, working alongside a well known conservation architect, to find a suitable and viable use for the building, which will allow it to be restored and adapted, giving this important building a sustainable and beneficial future.
The first stage study highlighted the potential use of the church as a glass centre featuring Bristol Blue Glass and work is nearing completion on project planning, organisational structures, content and funding. We also assisted the client in its HLF application.
