Birnbeck Pier, Weston super Mare
Prometheus has been chosen to provide Team 2 for a major study intended to identify a sustainable future for the presently closed and unsafe Birnbeck Pier in Weston super Mare. The pier was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1867.
It connects the headland to the east of Weston with a small island on which there are several derelict structures, including some listed buildings, which formerly comprised a visitor attraction. The client is a consortium of the Prince’s Foundation, North Somerset District Council and English Heritage.
Our work will seek to research and identify a range of sustainable new uses for the pier, which will provide the foundation for funding applications to enable the repair of the pier and its adaptation for the identified uses. We will be working alongside a conservation architect led Team 1.
